#124 - Masculinity with Itumeleng Makale
Sunday May 17, 2020
Sunday May 17, 2020
In this episode I’m in conversation with Itumeleng Makale discussing the elusive topic of masculinity.
I chose this subject because the tendency is to talk about femininity. I also chose this topic because it has become difficult to speak of masculinity without adding the prefix; toxic. Such that all we seem to know about masculinity is toxic masculinity.
Itu is one of the few men I know who can unpack this subject from different angles.
In this conversation he unpacks masculinity from the physiological angle to spiritual, cultural and to behavioral angle
We inevitably cover many sub topics such as capitalism, patriarchy, feminism, womanism and black families.
The conversation is stretchy and insightful. You are in for a treat

We covered the taboos of why we, as adults and parents, are often uncomfortable speaking about certain body parts and functions with our children. This lead to talking about boundaries, consent, sex, sexuality and how we live in a society that makes speaking about these topics even harder.
