In this episode I am in conversation with Bongani Micheal on BLACK LOVE - BLACK MEN. Ever since the George Floyd incident, black men have preoccupied my mind a little more than usual. I have been obsessing on their well being, their struggles, private and public and also their love - how do black men love. Bongani Michael a long time friend and colleague of mine is one of the best people to have such intellectual, philosophical and spiritual conversation with about black love and black love.
In the conversation we cover amongst other things, the era of the individual, how black boys and girls are raised separately, black families, the subtle war between black men and black women. The matter of provision, black men and spirituality and some of the controversial ideas Bongani has of bridging the gap between black men and black women.
It is a reviting and somewhat controversial conversation

Thank you Bongani. It is true that men learn from their friends and also having a wife often helps the man to grow.

I'm agreed with a new converstation about a different future we should construct together for ourselves & others around us. I like the stepping back idea. In my case, retrenshcment forced me to confront with that reality & at first it wasnt easy...not that it is now. I've somehow stepped back & my world is being opened in ways totally unexpected. Men, in my view need to be empowered but differently. Let's try women Bongani & we'll be surprised...ask yourself why they've banished all along

Beutiful converstn. Both you & Bongani are just brilliant. I met him in 2019 & fell in love with his mind. I love the idea of boys/girls dichomoty as a problem. Enlightening indeed. I do think we need to rethink the whole matter of empowerment, as it is in my view limited in several ways. Our own embrace of everything Western ways of doing things, abondoning our African heritage as no effort is made to modify it & adapt it & make it user friendly & relevant to modern times

About vaccination, I agree people should make their choices. I have been anti-vacs before this so it has nothing to do with tracking. I foresee the future impact though not been able to travel abroad freely like now your child cannot get into the government schools without the vacs card. To each his own.

Bongani I love how you think! You are correct. The “new dance’ should be ❣️men stepping back without being meek and submissive❣️women occupying space without trying to dominate. We cannot deny the the Yin-Yang movements of the universe! We have to be WILLING to acknowledge these truths and be willing to participate on in the dance. We will step on each other’s toes... be willing to apologise and start again over and over again. Siyabonga my friend. Your brilliant mind reminds me of Biko

Yeah we are maladjusted on BOTH ends! I’m in strong agreement with the family unit. My understanding of why we have issues is... we are uncoachable. We don’t know how to “relationship”... so as a professional black woman... all I absolutely need is- a partner that can relationship. Grow. Have aspirations. That means- we are in healing spaces (not church by the way), but it’s unhelpful to be in healing spaces on our own! Where do Black men go?

Great interview. Loved Bongani’s mind. Completely agree with Bongani on the importance of a family structure. I also agree with African men allowing themselves to step back and give space for women but I am not in total agreement with his reasons. I also agree that men learn more from other men but these learning can’t be effective without involving women. Can’t wait for Part 2 , 3 ...
