#128 - Understanding Autism with Dineo Makenete
In this episode, I’m in conversation with Dineo Makenete on Autism
In a nutshell Autism is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior.
Dineo is a mother to a boy child living with autism Tumelo. She shares with me not from an expert nor academic point of view but rather, from a mother’s perspective. She speaks of the challenges and dynamics of mothering Tumi from all aspects of life such as social, economic and cultural.

Other Dineo here, lol, Dineo Phiri. Mother to a 9 years old boy with autism, the struggle is unreal. You have no formula on this one, what works on Monday will never work on Tuesday as in tomorrow from Monday yesterday. Now I am at a point where by I have to learn every everything I can about him. I want to be able to give solutions to our help over the phone. I have given up on social life because unfortunately fortunately for me, he is my first born so he has no one to mind him or I will not look forward to getting headbutt or grabbed to bruises on my return. It brings out our demons but we keep striving to be the best of what these special humans need, with single parenting making it a walk in a dark tunnel. But we always bounce back from the love, hope and encouragement we see in their eyes cause lol they can never say it... Love and lights moms and thank you Ausi Principal for always always carrying us in your thoughts and teaching space🙏🏼💙💙💙💙
